Johannes Brahms String Sextet No. 2 in G,
op. 3 “Agathe"
Antonin Dvořák Bass Quintet in G, op. 77,
B. 49
Two titans of the Romantic age in the most romantic of settings–the private theater of W.R. Hearst. Submitted to a Viennese Music competition, Dvořák’s String Quintet promptly won with its blend of vibrant and lovely Czech melodies, energetic rhythms and overall musical celebration of life. Despite his lifelong bachelorhood, Brahms fell in love numerous times. This Sextet was written in part to relieve the composer of his anguish over a failed engagement with a woman he was unwilling to marry. To clear his conscience, he wove the letters of her name into the music itself.
Enjoy hearty hors d’oeuvres, award-winning wines from Tablas Creek Vineyard and a Pacific sunset on the Neptune Terrace before enjoying the intimate presentation of these engaging works.
