Dohnányi Sextet in C, op. 37
An evening of joyous beauty. Paul Schoenfeild’s witty “high-class dinner music” is followed by one of the masterpieces of the 20th century, Shostakovich’s lyrical Piano Quintet, reflecting an idyllic time before the outbreak of war. Dohnányi’s rollicking Sextet was written as the composer was recovering from a thrombosis. The process must have been highly restorative, as Brahms later remarked, “I could not have written it better myself.”
