Haydn Piano Trio in G, Hob: X:25
“Gypsy Rondo”
Fauré Piano Quartet No. 1 in c, op. 15
Zimmerli Piano Trio No. 1
An evening of music director Scott Yoo‘s favorite works to play and share. Haydn’s most famous Piano Trio, written for his mistress, abounds with Hungarian ‘gypsy’ spirit in its finale movement. Written during the turmoil of a broken engagement, Fauré’s expressive Piano Quartet showcases the composer as the link between the romanticism of Brahms and Debussy’s sensual impressionism. A performance of young American composer Patrick Zimmerli’s second Piano Trio brought audiences to their feet at the 2009 Festival. The equally energetic first Piano Trio is a lyrical sweep of Brahmsian proportions and jazz tonalities–a piece whose world premiere was secured before Zimmerli had even written the piece.
